There is a very strong tradition of sporting excellence at Pate's. PE and Games form part of the curriculum of all pupils until Year 12, after which it is a voluntary activity that is still undertaken by the great majority.
Our aim is to involve as many pupils as possible by offering a wide range of activities, during and after the school day.
There is an extensive programme of extra-curricular matches against other schools, many of them played on Saturdays. There are Inter-House competitions in most sports at all ages, and a range of extra-curricular sports clubs, so the great majority of pupils have the opportunity to be involved in some way.
Many students combine their core PE with GCSE and A Level to further develop on their practical experiences with theoretical understanding and knowledge.
Facilities have been developed over the years including 5 pitches, astroturf, 6 tennis courts, 4 netball courts, sports hall, gymnasium, climbing wall and fully equipped fitness suite.
In recent years there have been sports tours to Argentina, South Africa, Canada, Barbados and Australia. Each year there are 2 ski trips visiting the Alps.
For girls the main winter sports are hockey and netball, while in the summer activities are tennis, rounders and athletics. For boys the main winter sports are rugby and football (the latter is played in the Spring Term from Year 9 upwards), with cricket and athletics in the Summer Term. Basketball, gymnastics, dance, badminton, volleyball, fitness activities and other sports are also taught in core PE and during extra-curricular clubs
Pate’s individuals and teams enjoy considerable local and national success. At a time when school sport is under threat nationally we want to maintain the strength and breadth of sport at Pate’s. We believe strongly that representing the school is a privilege, and our policy is that if an individual is selected to play for the school, then that represents a priority engagement over other activities.
