  • Outstanding Achievements

This morning was the biggest House assembly event of the year. Heads of House awarded individual House Colours to those Year 10 & 11 students who had shown the most outstanding participation and support for House events this year. Onto the main awards and I was delighted to award the Sports Cup to Richmond (2nd Gloucester; 3rd Beaufort; 4th York) and the Competitions Cup to Gloucester (2nd Richmond; 3rd York; 4th Beaufort). There was great anticipation as the overall winner of the House Cup was announced – with only 3 points separating first and second place, the winner of the House Cup 2016 is GLOUCESTER! (2nd Richmond; 3rd Beaufort, 4th York.) Congratulations to all involved – that would be just about everyone! Huge thanks to the Heads of House – there can be no exaggerating how much above and beyond they go to support the students in these events. Special thanks to Alex Derbyshire and Sam Pickering who have handed over the Heads of House baton to Meg Jones and Mitchell Renton; they are a huge act to follow so the very best of luck to Meg and Mitchell, and also to Edward Derbyshire who is now Head of Pembroke House. The stage is set and House officials have already begun auditions for the first competition - House Drama. I can’t wait, especially as this year for the first time all rehearsals will take place during school hours, with a special timetable at the end of term to allow more rehearsal time, so even more students will be enabled to take part. And those for whom drama is just too dramatic can expect a variety of other exciting activities which are currently being planned within departments…more on this over the coming weeks. There is much to look forward to!

What a wonderful night of Jazz we enjoyed on Tuesday evening, thanks to our Dixie and Jazz bands and their teacher Gill Mew. It was entertainment of such a high level from both singers and musicians, and the finale of ‘Uptown Funk’ was out of this world! Congratulations and well done to everyone involved and to Gill of course.

Are you interested in becoming a teacher? Do you know anybody who might be?
The Teaching School arm of Pate’s Grammar School (Odyssey Teaching School Alliance) is again offering Schools Direct teacher training places for September 2016. This is a fantastic opportunity to train within a school environment with placements available at Pate’s Grammar School, our neighbours All Saints’ Academy and our new Secondary pairing Sir Thomas Rich's Grammar and Tewkesbury (at secondary level). In 2016 places are still available in Art, English, Biology, Computer Science, MFL, Chemistry, Geography and Physics. If you or someone you know might be interested in pursuing a teaching career and you have the relevant degree please do visit the ITT/Schools Direct section of our website (here), or alternatively email This email address is being protected from spambots. School Gateway Update:  You may remember that we recently proposed a change to the School Gateway parent pay system and invited your comments. Having received minimal feedback from parents, we have decided to go ahead with our proposal to remove the credit or debit card payment option - therefore from 1st May the only payment option will be instant bank transfer (once bank details are added, the payment process is just as simple as paying by card).

Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers – just a reminder that we are avid collectors of these vouchers and would love to receive any you may have! Please note that the scheme expires on 3rd May so please could you send in any that you have over the next few weeks. Thank you.

Consultation ends on Sunday for the National Schools Funding Formula and I would urge you to respond and have your say in making school funding fair for all – please follow this link to the online consultation. A number of parents requested more detailed guidance on how to respond to the consultation. Whilst it is not my intention to instruct parents on how to respond, it might be helpful for you to see the responses agreed by, and in the best interests of, Grammar school Heads groups – please follow this link for details. The fact is that Gloucestershire is a poorly funded county and Grammar schools in particular are badly affected. Thank you for helping us try to change this.

Congratulations to Elliot Archer (Y13), who was awarded ‘Top Student’ of the Qualified Aerospace Instructors Course at RAF Linton on Ouse. He beat 39 other senior cadets from squadrons across the UK, who competed over 7 months. They were examined in Leadership & teamwork, Air Power, Air Traffic, Aerodynamics, Pilot Studies, Instructional Technique, Basic Flight Training and Radio Communications; they also submitted an extended essay, gave presentations and had a 45 minute interview. I am sure you will agree that this is an incredible achievement. Elliot has been selected for interview with the Honourable Company of Air Pilots for a Flying Scholarship. Very well done to Elliot and good luck with the interview!

It has been an exciting time for a number of our sportswomen, notably Katie Gleeson playing hockey for England and Megan Mather for Wales. These are such outstanding achievements requiring absolute dedication and determination. Hats off to them! Many of our students are accomplishing great things outside school and it is so good to hear news of them – please do check the website for all the latest news shared with us by parents and students. And keep them coming!
