Senior students have now begun their GCSE and A Level exams and there is a sense of purpose and quiet determination in school. The exams are running very smoothly and my thanks to Anne Dickinson and Sarah Graves for all their attention to detail to make this happen, and to pastoral staff for providing that extra support for any students who need it. There are foreign languages trips in the offing for the younger year groups, with some of our Y9 & 10s away on their French exchange and the Y8s off to Bremen in Germany this weekend. My thanks to the staff for taking the students on these trips – hugely beneficial experiences which I am sure they will always remember.

Music Department ISM Gold Award: The Music Department has been awarded a gold award from the Incorporated Society of Musicians for their GCSE work. Last year over 20% of the cohort took GCSE music, making us one of only 87 schools in the country to have so many pupils studying music at GCSE. This includes the 4 specialist music schools as well as top independent schools which have a clear focus on music. Including these specialist schools we were ranked 19th in the country for the music results. It is wonderful to have such a flourishing Music Department and it reflects well that the value of studying the arts at GCSE is understood. Congratulations to Ellie Lane and her Music Department on receiving this impressive award. I am very proud that as a school we have so many opportunities to enjoy concerts and performances, which is only possible because we have outstanding staff who are prepared to give above and beyond to inspire students and make it happen. Preparations are already underway for the end of term House Drama competition, when the students will be showcasing all they have learned about music, drama, dance and, above all, teamwork and leadership. I can’t wait!

BBC casting agents will be holding an improvisation workshop in school next Thursday 26th May 6-7pm, in PAB. They are looking for boys between Y7-Y13 inclusive who think they are good at (comedic) improvisation – they are looking for boys who are funny, can improvise, and are perhaps more physically quirky, for a new BBC Three comedy series to be filmed this September. Anyone interested should contact Edward Derbyshire (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). This opportunity has been made available to our students through Edward’s youth theatre group, the Gloucestershire Youth Players.

Just a reminder that the MAT consultation period ends next Friday 27th May at midday and we would like to hear your views if you have not been in touch already. Thank to those who have taken the time to respond, either by email or in person. Your views are very valuable to us as we consider next steps.
