We are delighted to have been informed that our 2 bids submitted to the Education Funding Agency’s Condition Improvement Fund just before Christmas, have been successful. The first bid is for an upgrade to our electrical supply and distribution system worth £131,000. These works will be carried out over the summer holidays, but the contractors will avoid any disruption to results days. The grant for the electrical supply works is great news as we would have had to find these funds from our own budget in the near future. The second bid is to refurbish our Outdoor Education Building to provide 2 additional good sized classrooms and is worth £181,000. These works will take place during the autumn and winter. Outdoor Education activities and CCF will continue throughout, but will operate from a temporary office facility; the shooting range will be unaffected. There will inevitably be some disruption to the area around OED and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience which may result. The grant to provide 2 classrooms is well timed and allows us to be ahead of the game at providing additional classroom space for our expanding numbers. The bid process does not allow any request for funds for furniture or IT to equip the classrooms, so we are absolutely delighted that our fabulous Parents’ Association has agreed to help us and will be fundraising in support of this project over the coming months.

Staff Vacancy: Science Technician (part-time, term time only). We have a vacancy in school for a Science Technician from September, based in the Physics Department, to work 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday term time only. The job includes organising practical work in the labs, assembling apparatus, maintaining equipment, ordering stock and liaising with teaching staff. Whilst a science background would be an advantage, it is more important to us that applicants are practical, forward thinking, flexible and able to use their own initiative whilst working as part of a team. Staff Vacancy: Reprographics Coordinator (part-time, term time only). We are looking a Reprographics Coordinator to support staff and students in their reprographic needs and also ensure that photocopiers and supplies are maintained. This person will be part of the front office team at school and there will also be school Reception cover required on an ad hoc basis, as well as a variety of other school office duties. Hours of work will be 08:30-11:30 Monday to Friday, although some flexibility will be required during busy periods. School Sport Celebration Evening – Years 7-10, Tuesday 28th June 2016 - Main Hall 7-9.30pm, when the captains and players of our teams will present a review of their season, with players’ player of the year presentations and any trophies celebrated. Junior Concert - Thurs 30th June @ 7pm: Tickets are now on sale for the end of year Junior Concert – this is the culmination of a year in the life of our orchestras, ensembles and choirs, and such a pleasure to see how our musicians have progressed over the year, both individually and collaboratively - it is a fantastic evening of musical entertainment. Tickets costs £6 (adults) and £4 students and are available to buy in advance (here) or on the door.
You are warmly invited to attend the Pate’s Summer Exhibition in the Art Gallery on Wednesday 6th July 4.30-7pm. The exhibition will showcase this year’s sixth form work and includes video, photography, textiles, painting, sculpture and ceramics. The exhibition will be open and available to view between 6th and 14th July.

Sports Update:
Girls’ Minors Athletics Championships:  Just a week after the success of the Boys’ Minors, it was the turn of the girls in their Minors’ Championships. Unfortunately, due to trips to Normandy and Y8 camp, we were not able to enter full teams. Instead, we allowed any girls who were around to enter any events they wanted to do. Despite only taking 8 Y7 girls, we managed to win 5 or the 10 events in the competitions with Molly Powlesland (1500m) and Rachel Smith (Shot Putt) winning their events. Elsewhere, Naomi Layzell put in one of the most impressive athletic performances ever seen at Pate’s with wins in the High Jump, Long Jump and 800m. As a result, the depleted Y7 team still managed to win their competition – very well done and congratulations!
South West Championships:  Well done to all the Pate’s athletes who were selected represent Gloucestershire Athletics Team to compete against all the best talent from across the region in the South West Athletics Championships. All our athletes did themselves, the school and their families proud:
County Girls’ Results: Jade Gough (IG 1500m- 5th), Alex Quinn-Savory (SG 400m- 5th), Bethan Moor (SG 3000m- 2nd), Mel Bird (SG Shot- 1st and Discus- 1st) and Ellen Thrall (SG Hammer- 1st).
County Boys’ Results: Jack Musselwhite (JB 300m- 7th), Rory Cawkwell (IB 200m- 8th) and Jacob Pickering (SB 3000m- 5th).
As a result of their fantastic throwing, Ellen Thrall (Hammer) and Mel Bird (Discus) have been selected to represent Gloucestershire at the National Athletics Championships. This is particularly impressive when you remember that the whole county is only allowed 25 athletes across all age groups, all events and both males and females. Well done to Ellen and Mel, you throw with the support of the whole school community behind you.

Summer Holiday Performing Arts workshops and performances:  There is a great deal of performing arts available through Pate’s over the summer holidays – hopefully you will be able to catch some of them – please see details below:

Gloucestershire Youth Players, under the direction of our own Edward Derbyshire, will be touring with the summer production “Comedy of Errors”. This year all of the performers are in fact Patesians past and present – there are lots of lovely summer venues and, as anyone who has been to previous performances will tell you, there is sure to be lots of fun!

The Patesian Players – ex-Pate’s students who get together with our retired Head of Drama Rory O’Sullivan to perform two productions each year – are putting on John Godber’s 1987 School Report “Teechers”. Performances are on 18th, 19th and 20th August @ 7.45pm at The Playhouse, Cheltenham and tickets cost £12/£10 and are available here. They do put on excellent plays and I am sure this one will be no exception – and sounds like good fun.

Acting, Film-Making and Singing Summer Workshops: Please follow this link for details of acting, film-making and singing workshops in July, taking place at Pate’s run by the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts. Sue Day, who runs PQA Cheltenham is a friend of the school and we would like to recommend her excellent professional workshops to all students in Y7-10.

Secondhand Uniform:  If you have any school uniform that your child has outgrown (particularly year 7s who have shot up since September) please bring it to reception before next Wednesday. That evening parents of the Year 6s who are due to start in September will be scouring the PA secondhand uniform stall for supplies. This week is the first of our Activities Fortnight and every student has their own individual timetable of events which they have signed up to. On offer there is music, singing, dance, drama, art, sport, cookery and trips, plus the great outdoors and more besides! Huge thanks to Rachel Thorpe for organising this complex timetable – thanks to her hard work our students are going to have a really memorable and enjoyable end of term. This is the first time we have attempted anything quite like this and there will no doubt be things we will learn from it, but I am sure it is going to be a big hit with the students! Daytime rehearsals will begin for the House Drama competition and I know that House Officials have been very busy over recent weeks - writing, auditioning, and choreographing their pieces – how exciting! I can’t wait. We will let parents and students know once tickets are available at the end of next week.
