The exam season finally drew to a close this week and we have been hugely impressed with the way the students have thrown themselves into Activities Fortnight and House Drama rehearsals!  Parents too have joined in, celebrating outstanding performances at the School Sports Celebration evening and Junior concert this week.  We opened the school up for Year 4 and 5 families to come and have a look around and they saw our students sampling just a few of the exciting activities laid on this week, including bushcraft, baking, climbing, shooting, sport, art, drama and orchestra workshops. We also welcomed parents of our new Y7 starting in September, who came in to meet staff and student mentors for their first visit as Pate’s parents – I don’t know who was more excited, the parents or the staff!  My thanks to Helen Blackwell for organising such a super evening for them. Thank you to everyone who donated second-hand uniform – the new Y7 parents took the opportunity to stock up and the PA managed to raise £385 overall on the night!  Wow!  Huge thanks also to the teams of mums and dad who ran the bars at the Sports evening and Junior Concert, raising a further £763.  That is £1148 raised by the PA in three evenings this week!  What outstanding dedication – thank you so much!

We have sold out of tickets for the last night of House Drama.  However, at the time of writing tickets are still available for the Tuesday evening and the Wednesday matinee (here), costing £8 (adults) & £3 (students).  Tickets can also be bought over the counter at Reception.  There are more students involved than ever before and the evening performances in particular will be very much oversubscribed, therefore we politely request that families limit their ticket buying to no more than 4.  A quick plug for the matinee performance, which is just as good a show as the others; it has a good sized audience but is less of a squeeze, (especially favoured by grandparents)!

Year 9 CCF from September:  Current Y8 students can now sign up via the CCF website to join up from September (here).   There will be a CCF induction day for new joiners – briefing / kit issue etc. - on 6th September.  Cadets meet every Friday after school for training and activities.  This is something different from school life; it is a new discipline, with lots of outdoor activities and plenty of opportunities for leadership and development.  Full details are available on the CCF website (here).

Staff Vacancy: Science Technician (part-time, term time only). We have a vacancy in school for a Science Technician from September, based in the Physics Department, to work 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday term time only. The job includes organising practical work in the labs, assembling apparatus, maintaining equipment, ordering stock and liaising with teaching staff. Whilst a science background would be an advantage, it is more important to us that applicants are practical, forward thinking, flexible and able to use their own initiative whilst working as part of a team. Please follow this link for full details. The deadline for applications is midday on Tuesday 5th July.

You are warmly invited to attend the Pate’s Summer Exhibition in the Art Gallery on Wednesday 6th July 4.30-7pm. The exhibition will showcase this year’s sixth form work and includes video, photography, textiles, painting, sculpture and ceramics. The exhibition will be open and available to view between 6th and 14th July.

Holiday Performing Arts workshops and performances:  There is a great deal of performing arts available through Pate’s over the summer holidays – hopefully you will be able to catch some of them – please see details below:

Gloucestershire Youth Players, under the direction of our own Edward Derbyshire, will be touring with the summer production “Comedy of Errors”. This year all of the performers are in fact Patesians past and present – there are lots of lovely summer venues and, as anyone who has been to previous performances will tell you, there is sure to be lots of fun!  Please follow this to their website for full details.

The Patesian Players – ex-Pate’s students who get together with our retired Head of Drama Rory O’Sullivan to perform two productions each year – are putting on John Godber’s 1987 School Report “Teechers”. Performances are on 18th, 19th and 20th August @ 7.45pm at The Playhouse, Cheltenham and tickets cost £12/£10 and are available here. They do put on excellent plays and I am sure this one will be no exception – and sounds like good fun.

Acting, Film-Making and Singing Summer Workshops: There are acting, film-making and singing workshops in July, taking place at Pate’s run by the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts. Sue Day, who runs PQA Cheltenham is a friend of the school and we would like to recommend her excellent professional workshops to all students in Y7-10.  Please follow this link to their website for full details.
