Cricket Festival week: The sun shone for our annual cricket festival week with 6 competitive games played. The week started with the 1st XI battling against a strong group of former students in the Headmasters XI. School were chasing 205 to win with Innes Gardener ending on 97 not out after the 20 overs. Unfortunately the 1st XI fell 6 short of the run chase.
The U13s and U15s both beat All Saints and Balcarras respectively in their leagues on the Tuesday with the U14s beating Balcarras in a friendly. The U15s game was a County Cup double header, which means they play Sir Thomas Rich’s in the final next week. The U15 girls XI played a game on the grass square against Kings, Gloucester. They really enjoyed the experience but were 23 runs short of the Kings total.
The highlight of the week was the visit of the famous MCC men’s team to Pate’s on the Thursday. The young 1st XI did exceptionally well to limit the experienced MCC team to 123-7 at lunch. Unfortunately revived after some food the MCC pushed onto 246-8 before they declared. The 1st XI pushed hard with the bat with the talented Year 10s of Tim Andrew (49) and Oli Heaton-Jones (23) scoring freely. The highlight was Matt Long’s unbeaten 82 in a run chase that fell 35 short. Matt Long received the MCC Spirit of Cricket award for his top batting performance and attitude throughout the game.
We are thrilled to announce that the world-famous Cory Band will be holding a concert at Pate’s on Sunday 8 October 3-5.30pm. Cory regularly wins both domestic and international brass band competitions and performs a widely varied repertoire of music at home and abroad to a professional standard. The band seeks to grow its art form with powerful and inspiring experiences for its artists and its audiences. Proud of its roots, this ensemble also dares to step out of the traditional brass band genre to deliver a tantalising mixture of both blockbusting and beautiful music that amazes and captivates its audiences wherever it performs. Cory Band, whose home is in Treorchy in the Welsh Valleys, comprises both male and female performers of mixed ages and backgrounds, hailing from near and far, but with one thing in common – the drive to do whatever it takes to keep Cory at the top of its game. Performances are wonderfully entertaining and offer music that everyone can enjoy. Don’t miss a fantastic opportunity to discover the brass band sound that is breaking new ground! Tickets cost £10 – or £15 to sit on the balcony – and are available to buy on our website (here). There will be a bar provided by our Parents’ Association.
Cory Band concerts are incredible – so don’t miss out, and please do spread the word (this event is open to the general public). Please take a look at the Cory Band homepage and the Cory Band Youtube channel

Boys’ Minors Athletics Championships: This week is was the turn of the Y7 and Y8 boys to represent Pate’s in athletics against the rest of the Cheltenham District. The aim was to retain the Minors’ Shield for the 19th consecutive year and this was achieved with unprecedented success. Amongst this group of outstanding athletes, Joe Coley (Y7) was possibly the most impressive with two 1st places (High Jump and Long Jump) and a 2nd place (100m) from his maximum three events. Max Liu (Y8) also broke the hurdles record which was set in 1984! In total, there were 13 1st place finishes and we scored points (top 6 finish) in 42 of the 48 performances! It is this strength in depth and utter commitment to the team which led to emphatic wins in both year groups and the shield returning to Pate’s. Well done all! Mr Stoneman and Mr Dandy
Athletics County Championships: Following the success of Pate’s athletes at the District Championships, many athletes from Pate’s represented Cheltenham at the County Championships. Despite there being a few athletes selected who couldn’t perform, the following did themselves, the school and Cheltenham proud! In total, our students were crowned County Champions in 11 out of the 18 events entered with many now double County Champions (and most competing with the year group above them).
- Tim Andrew Y10 (100m 3rd)
- Mel Bird Y13 (Shot 1st and Discus 1st)
- Rory Cawkwell (100m 1st - Championship Record! - and 200m 1st)
- Emma Clarke Y10 (800m 3rd and 300m 2nd)
- Will Crisp Y12 (800m 1st)
- Amelia Errington Y12 (800m 1st)
- Luke Goddard Y10 (High Jump 1st)
- Oliver Keitley Y9 (200m 1st and Triple Jump 1st)
- Inca Padfield Y10 (800m 2nd and Triple Jump 3rd)

- Molly Powlesland Y8 (1500m 3rd)

The majority of these athletes have now been selected to represent Gloucestershire at the South West Championships in Exeter on Saturday – we wish them the best of luck. It is thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of Pate’s PE staff that our students have so many opportunities to shine at top level sport – so congratulations to Simon Dandy and the team as well!
