We are now into the final week of sixth form exams and the countdown begins to the end of term, when I look forward to welcoming many of you into school to enjoy our summer events, including our Sports Presentation Evening, Junior Concert, Summer Art Exhibition (breath taking by the way!), and of course House Drama at the end of term! Staff have been brilliant, organising end of exam celebrations, trips and days out and I must say a very big thank you to Ruth Harding and Fiona Hutton-Potts in particular, for all the hard work and thoughtfulness that went into making the Y11 Prom such a special event and something to remember.

One more week of lessons and then the students will go off timetable for ‘Activities Fortnight’, the fortnight beginning 3rd July, which is crammed with activities, trips, rehearsals and events. Your son or daughter will receive their final personalised timetable by email over the weekend. Please do take time to look through this with them - it tells them not only which activities they are involved in, but also what they need to bring/wear each day etc. Any queries should be directed to Miss Thorpe at This email address is being protected from spambots. Orchestra & Choir Workshops: For parents of all students involved in the orchestra and choir workshops on day one of Activities Fortnight (July 3rd) there is a special message from Ellie Lane our Director of Music, which can be found by clicking here.

Girls’ Minors Athletics Championships: This week was the turn of the Y7 and Y8 girls to represent Pate’s in athletics against the rest of the Cheltenham District. Last week saw the boys win in emphatic style and this week the girls continued our unprecedented success with big wins in the Y7 and Y8 competitions which allowed a huge winning total in the overall competition - twice as many points as 2nd place! Amongst this group of outstanding athletes, Naomi Layzell (Y8) was probably the most impressive with 1st places in High Jump, Long Jump and 800m from her maximum three events. Equally impressive were the Y7 team who won every single event apart from two. Well done and thanks to Mrs Dandy and Miss Jones.

South West Athletics Championships: Following the success of Pate’s athletes at the County Championships, many athletes from Pate’s represented Gloucestershire at the South West Championships in Exeter. This is an exceptionally high standard of performance and the results below will result in a record number of Pate’s students travelling in the county squad for the National Championships. A special mention must go to Holly Bankes (Y12) who won the senior girls’ 400m (a South West champion, against girls in the year above!). Here is an amazing set of results: Tim Andrew (100m 7th), Holly Bankes (400m 1st), Mel Bird Y13 (Shot 5th and Discus 5th), Rory Cawkwell Y12 (100m 2nd in heat and 200m 4th), Emma Clarke Y10 (300m 7th in heat), Will Crisp Y12 (800m 1st), Amelia Errington Y12 (800m 3rd), Oliver Keitley Y9 (200m 7th in heat and Triple Jump 6th), Grace Knapp Y12 (1500m 2nd), Inca Padfield Y10 (800m 2nd in heat), Molly Powlesland Y9 (1500m 6th) and Jamie Worman Y12 (Hurdles 3rd and Long Jump 5th).  Congratulations to everyone.

Sports Team Photos:  We are taking the summer team sports photos on Tuesday 27th June. Please see the attached timetable and be sure to arrive on time wearing the correct kit.

NB:  Students who ordered a winter team photo can collect from the refectory at break times or the PE office.

Upcoming Events:
School Sport Celebration Evening – Years 7-10 - Tuesday 4th July 7-9.30pm in the main hall: We would like to invite all pupils and parents with any connection to sport at Pate’s in Years 7 to 10 to our “Sports Celebration Evening”. The event will begin at 7pm in the main hall at Pate’s on Tuesday 4th July and finish by about 9.30pm. The PA will be serving drinks and snacks during the evening. The captains and players of our teams will present a review of their season, with players’ player of the year presentations and any trophies celebrated. Our special guest will be former student Holly Hill, who is a GB U23 rower as well as being a member of the winning Cambridge Varsity boat race this year. Please follow this link to book your free places for this event.  Here’s looking forward to a sporty evening, from Mr Dandy and the PE Department.

Junior Concert – Wednesday 5th July 7pm in the hall: Tickets are now available for this, the final concert of the school year. Do join us to celebrate the talent and dedication of our young musicians and choirs - it is such a pleasure to see how they have developed over the year. It is always a warm relaxed evening and there will be a bar provided by the Parents’ Association – a lovely way to celebrate the end of another musical year at Pate’s. Tickets cost £6 (adults) and £4 (students) and are available from Ticketsource (here).

We are thrilled to announce that the world-famous Cory Band will be holding a concert at Pate’s on Sunday 8 October 3-5.30pm. Cory regularly wins both domestic and international brass band competitions and performs a widely varied repertoire of music at home and abroad to a professional standard. The band seeks to grow its art form with powerful and inspiring experiences for its artists and its audiences. Proud of its roots, this ensemble also dares to step out of the traditional brass band genre to deliver a tantalising mixture of both blockbusting and beautiful music that amazes and captivates its audiences wherever it performs. Cory Band, whose home is in Treorchy in the Welsh Valleys, comprises both male and female performers of mixed ages and backgrounds, hailing from near and far, but with one thing in common – the drive to do whatever it takes to keep Cory at the top of its game. Performances are wonderfully entertaining and offer music that everyone can enjoy. Don’t miss a fantastic opportunity to discover the brass band sound that is breaking new ground! Tickets cost £10 – or £15 to sit on the balcony – and are available to buy on our website (here). There will be a bar provided by our Parents’ Association.  Cory Band concerts are incredible – so don’t miss out, and please do spread the word (this event is open to the general public). Please take a look at the Cory Band homepage and the Cory Band Youtube channel.

Host Families for Chinese Students in September: We are pleased to announce that as part of continued friendship with HaiLiang School in China, we are offering students the chance to host a Chinese young person this coming September. Hosting forms are available here. To ensure that you are in with a chance and don't miss out, forms must be returned by Friday 7th July. School Transport Update:

  • Travel-share enquiry from a family living in the Forest of Dean area (travelling from near Mitcheldean to Cheltenham daily ) – they would ideally like to provide transport home at the end of the school day, in exchange for providing transport into Pate’s in the mornings.
  • Travel-share enquiry from a family travelling in from Westbury On Trym, Bristol – to possibly share travel to the train station.
  • If you would like to pursue either of these enquiries please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

School Gateway (our on-line payment system): Please note that the minimum student account top-up for next academic year will be increased to £25. Also, just a reminder that Refectory tokens can be purchased from the school’s Revel machine, using cash at any time.

Finally, anyone for croquet?! A family has generously donated a brand new Croquet set to the PA which they are selling to raise funds for Making £nds Meet. It is a great value, entry level complete croquet set, and includes mallets of all different sizes to suit even the smallest members of the family. It retails for about £95 but they would like £50.
