Pate’s House Drama 2017 tickets are now on sale! There are record numbers of students taking part this year and tickets will sell out very quickly, especially for the evening performances. Please do, where possible, consider the matinée performance, especially if you are buying more than 2 tickets – it is ideal for grandparents and younger families; there is a lovely atmosphere and it is every bit as good as the evening performances, just a less busy, more relaxing experience! Tickets are available on the school website (here).

It has been an exciting week of activities and events. It was great to hear so many performances on a wide range of instruments and from beginners up to diploma level in Tuesday’s Lower School Music Competition! The results for each class are attached here.  Many thanks to Oliver Parker (CLC), Helen McNaught and Charlotte Lapham for adjudicating. Over 200 parents and students enjoyed the Sports Celebration Evening on Tuesday, hearing speeches from team captains about the highs and lows of their season. Please follow this link for full details. Players’ Player of the Year awards were presented by the staff following a student vote (click here for details). The highlight of the evening was an inspirational speech from ex-student Holly Hill - as well as studying at Cambridge University, she was also a member of the successful Varisty boat race team this year. We were lucky she could squeeze us into her busy schedule before flying to Switzerland the following morning to compete for the first time for GB seniors with her target of Tokyo 2020 in her sights.

The CCF return to Pate's today after a busy week at Okehampton Battle Camp. The contingent came away with prizes as winner of the Wyvern Challenge with an outstanding performance at competition events which included shooting, command tasks and military skills. In addition, the contingent was awarded the prize for best overall contingent. Individual prizes included: Best shot of basic cadets - Tom Stevens; Best shot of advanced cadets - James Nicholls; Best basic phase cadet - Alice Folkard; Best advanced phase cadet - Harry Folkard. Contingent prizes awarded were: Best overall cadet - Ollie Karn; Most improved cadet - Poppy Romback; Cadet showing best leadership potential - Dolores Fawcett-Till. The camp had many varied and exciting activities, including a day of adventure training where the cadets were able to conquer any fear of heights on the high ropes and display their planning and construction skills with a raft race. Military skills were taught and practised and all basic cadets received their signals qualification. The military activities were very popular and the cadets applied themselves to the training, returning with no injuries and in high spirits! It was a pleasure to accompany them; their behaviour and their initiative were exemplary and they very much deserved their Best Contingent Award - congratulations and well done to them. Commander Cameron MacKay

Mobile phones / devices in School: schools have long been divided on the use of mobile devices during the school day and many have recently reviewed their policies, with a number of schools choosing to ask students to leave them at home, and others removing all guidance on their use, giving unfettered access to them. During the Christmas term we undertook a digital detox and the feedback from you as parents was supportive of this. As a school we have reached a decision on how we would like to proceed with a trial mobile phone policy for the next academic year. Please follow this link for further details. If you have any queries please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

CAUTION: Snapchat dangers! We have been made aware that, following a recent Snapchat update (these are usually automatic), standard settings allow others to see the location (or last known online location) of users. More alarmingly, this also means that if a student (or any Snapchat user) posts to a public story then anyone can see what they've photographed or videoed. This shows up on the map and, by zooming in or out, can bring it down to a local view pinpointing buildings, thus seeing where people live or spend their time. However, it is possible to turn this feature off by clicking 'settings' and going to 'ghost mode' but this must be done manually. Please follow this link to the BBC website ( for further information.

The 2017-18 school calendar is now published on the school website (here). A list of term dates for 2017-18 and 2018-19 (INSET days as yet unpublished) is also available on the school website. Please note that the online calendar will continue to be updated with latest events and trips, and may occasionally be subject to alterations due to unforeseen circumstances. Outstanding Success in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge 2017: Congratulations to Michael Brownlie, Ned Flewitt and Tom Hodgkinson, Y12 students who achieved highest honours in this year’s challenge. It is worth adding some background information so that we can appreciate this incredible achievement: 7058 students in the country sit the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge; of these, 55 students achieve the amazing heights of a Roentgenium award - higher than the traditional gold award - of these, 5 students in the country achieved 60/68 or above; of these, Tom, Michael and Ned are 3 of them. This is unprecedented in the history of sitting this challenge. Congratulations to them and all the rest of the Year 12s who sat the paper.

National Enterprise Competition final: well done to our team of Y9 students: Ryan Eccles, Isaac Fee, Emilia Miller, Aayush Mohta, Matthew Robyns-Landricombe and Eleanor Stiles, who, although pipped at the post this time, clearly impressed the judges in this exciting final, hosted by CBBC’s Sam & Mark and key backer Theo Paphitis. Here is the team photographed with Olympic gold medallist Joe Clarke.

Pate's U14's Rounders Tournament – gripping report! After a successful afternoon of House Rounders, the Y9 team were excited going into the tournament on 27 June. With the rather daunting prospect of opposition schools ahead of them, each player was aware of their position and role to play within the squad. The team worked really hard and deservedly gained three wins in their first three games, against Cleeve, Chosen Hill and Bournside. The last game in the group stages was against Cheltenham Ladies College - this proved to be a tough fixture which the Ladies College won, putting them top of the group, with Pate's still qualifying in 2nd place. The Pate's team was then drawn against the winner from the other group, Balcarras, with Cheltenham Ladies College playing Tewkesbury in the other Semi-Final. Pate's restricted Balcarras to a score of 3.5 rounders, to then bat for 6 rounders, the score-line not really showing how close the game was. Tewkesbury beat CLC after a 5 good ball play off. The final then consisted of Pate's vs Tewkesbury. Pate's, fielding first, were sharp and on their toes, they managed to dismiss several batters putting lots of pressure onto the Tewkesbury side, however they still managed to score a strong 6 rounders. It was then Pate's turn to bat, they started convincingly reaching 3 rounders within the first few balls, however this slowed. It was not until the very last 'good ball' at which point Pate's were tied 6-6 with the Tewkesbury team. Saloni Rai was facing the final ball and with a huge hit she impressively scored a whole rounder, very nearly being dismissed at 4th base, the final score 7-6 to Pate's. Hurray! The girls played very intelligently throughout, supporting each other on the pitch through sophisticated decision making and a great display of tactical awareness. A huge thank you must go out to Mrs Dandy for organising and running the tournament which just about avoided the rain, also to all of the teams who participated and demonstrated a great level of rounders throughout.
