The Parents’ Association ‘Back-to-School Day’ and school disco was great fun on Monday and raised over £3,000! I would like to thank those daring parents who signed themselves up for a day in lessons, including school lunch, choir practise and PE! All had managed to dress up in full uniform, complete with kit bag, and they blended right in! It is fair to say that a Pate’s school day is a full-on experience (as any student will tell you), and by the end of the day our high flyers were tired, but happy (I am excluding PE injuries and I do hope that the swelling is going down by now). Thanks to our fun-loving PA / parents / staff and thanks to all the students who were so welcoming and polite. Particular thanks to Shirley Park for organising and running (literally!) the event so perfectly. Here are some of the comments we received afterwards (photos to follow next week):

“It would be impossible to sum up just how impressive every aspect of the school was but, for me, the quality of the people we came into contact with I found very inspiring...”
“The students around the school were ALL models of good-manners and respect...”
“It's basically a shopping list of everything you would ever wish for in a teacher...”
“Thanks once again for an unforgettable day...”
“The whole experience almost made me wish I could repeat my school days! I do hope the current pupils appreciate how lucky they are to attend PGS!”

Looking ahead to next week, just a few practical details about House Drama: On Monday: students involved will be off timetable all day to rehearse. Those involved may again wear their House T Shirts. Year 12 not involved will have lessons as usual, years 7- 10 not involved will have a separate programme based over in Cookery with Mr Guichonet. On Tuesday: students should be back in full uniform - although they will need to remember their costumes here appropriate! Lessons 1 - 4 will happen as usual, although each House will miss one lesson in the morning and then take part in a medley rehearsal in the afternoon. On Tuesday evening pupils need to be back in school by 6:00 p.m. ready for the evening performance, and we would encourage pupils to go home between the end of school and the performance. However, if this is not possible, pupils may stay in school in the Refectory. Students opting to stay in school will need to stay in the Refectory from 3.45 – 6.30 pm and will need to bring a packed tea. They will not be allowed off site for any reason. PLEASE ALSO NOTE: Food will only be served in the Refectory at BREAK TIME on Tuesday - NOT AT LUNCH. On Wednesday: the House Drama matinée performance will finish at approximately 5.15 pm. Pupils may then either go home or again stay in school in the Refectory. On Wednesday evening the Parents Association will be serving Hot Dogs to pupils between performances - £1.50 (cash or 'finger') or again pupils can opt to bring a packed tea. Take Away Food (e.g. MacDonalds) may not be brought onto the school site by pupils in any year group on either night. Thank you in anticipation of your help with this. Any questions about the practical arrangements for House Drama next week should be directed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. We are all looking forward to three great performances!  Pate’s House Drama 2017 tickets are still available for the matinée performance (here).

House Drama - PARENT HELP NEEDED! The PA needs more volunteers to help serve refreshments at next week’s House Drama. Specifically they are short of help for the intervals in all three shows and to help serve food to all the students taking part from 4pm and 5.30pm on Wednesday (19th July). If you have some time or are coming to a performance please consider clicking on, popping your name down and ticking the time slot when you can help. Thank you.

PA's second-hand uniform needed! The PA's second-hand uniform sale was so successful at the Year 7s evening that is has been almost completely stripped of stock! Please, please, they beg, could you check through cupboards and donate any uniform you no longer need in particular sports kit and girls uniform. Please hand in to Reception. Thank you!

Charity Day Rides and Stalls! Please note that next Thursday 20th July – the penultimate day of term – is our annual Charity Day at school, organised by a team of sixth formers to raise money for their chosen charities: Cancer Research UK and British Heart Foundation. Students will pay £1 to dress in red, blue and pink (£1.50 for normal mufti). There will be wet inflatable rides, so students will need to bring a spare pair of clothes and towel for this. We also advise sun cream, a hat and plenty of water. Students will need to bring spending money so that they can go on the rides and take part in other activities and stalls. Small snacks will also be available to buy.

ORDER YOU HOUSE POLO SHIRTS FOR SEPTEMBER HERE: We are opening the ordering window for the optional House Polo shirts with an option to order and make payment via Schoolgateway. The order window will be open until Tuesday 18th July so that the bulk order can be placed before the summer holiday and the shirts available at the start of the new term in September. The polo shirts cost £10 each and are a classic polycotton polo shirt with collar, flat knit cuffs and three button neck opening. They also feature the school logo and relevant house name. The House Polo shirt is an OPTIONAL purchase but many students like to wear them for the various House Events that take place throughout the school year. If you would like to order one please do so via Schoolgateway (here). There is no need to indicate colour as this will come through against your son/daughter’s name when you place an order but it is ESSENTIAL THAT YOU INDICATE IN THE COMMENTS BOX THE SIZE YOU WANT. The 9-10 and 11-12 sizes are in the children’s range and the XS – L sizing are in the adult range, so the cuff diameter is more generous. Please follow this link to see a table of measurements / sizes.

Host Families for Chinese Students in September: We are pleased to announce that as part of continued friendship with HaiLiang School in China, we are offering students the chance to host a Chinese young person this coming September. Hosting forms are available here. To ensure that you are in with a chance and don't miss out, forms must be returned by Friday 7th July. Please follow this link for further information and answers to frequently asked questions attached.

As we approach the summer holidays I wanted to draw your attention to a new Netflix film which is being released on Friday called ‘To The Bone’. Eating disorder charities are divided on the show, with some worrying it will glamorise eating disorders. A useful link about the film can be found here . Our recommendation is that you watch the show yourselves first of all and if you deem it appropriate then watch it together with your son or daughter before having a discussion of the characterisation and portrayal of eating disorders. As always we will continue to support students to make healthy choices and lead healthy lifestyles through the pastoral system, PDC curriculum and academic lessons. We just felt it prudent to draw your attention to it before the holiday. Andrew Jones, Deputy Head.

OPRO Mouth guard fitting:  As in previous years, we have organised for OPRO to visit school with 2 dental teams to professionally fit mouth guards. As a school we highly recommend mouth guards for rugby and hockey to protect from impact injuries and potential concussion. The mouth guards are of excellent quality, designed individually and are always named. Please see the attached information and contact OPRO directly if you are interested in booking your child in for a fitting. The fitting will take place in the Art Gallery on Wednesday 13th September from 1.30pm.

Summer sports team photos:  A reminder that our summer team photos are now available from Academy Portraits by using the following link and access code: Access code: 4MQGF54L.
Pre-season rugby training:  With everyone excited about next season’s rugby, pre-season training has been organised for Friday 1st September, as detailed in the attached letter. Please make every effort to attend.  Thank you.

Year 7 Rounders District Tournament: The Y7 team played in the district tournament with little opposition in the pool stages but kept their focus to progress to the semi-final, beating all the schools convincingly by 10 rounders. They played Balcarras in the semi-final continuing the winning streak, ending the match 12 - 7.5. During the final they came across a fast bowler from Tewkesbury which caused them to change their batting position in the box to allow them time to place the hit. Also taking no balls enabled the team to have more scoring opportunities, ending with a rounders total of 8. The team displayed some excellent fielding, putting their tactical knowledge to the test and Tewksbury only managed to score 5.5 - making Year 7 district champions! Congratulations and very well done to them.

You may have previously read about the unprecedented individual athletics success this season. As a reminder, a record six Pate’s athletes were selected to represent Gloucestershire at the English Schools National Athletics Championships. The results are below but it would be wrong not to single out Will Crisp who was 2nd in the whole of England AND he can compete again next year as a Y13! Also very noteworthy is Mel Bird, who competed in her 5th(!) and final championships - that will be some record to beat!

Oliver Keitley (Y9) Junior Boys Triple jump- 14th
Rory Cawkwell (Y12) Senior Boys 200m- 4th in heat
Will Crisp (Y12) Senior Boys 800- Silver medal
Jamie Worman (Y12) Senior Boys Long Jump- 10th
Holly Bankes (Y12) Senior Girls 400m- 4th in final
Melissa Bird (Y13) Senior Girls Discus- 10th

Rehearsals are going very well for next week’s House Drama and the excitement is building. Our independent judges very kindly came into school to see how rehearsals are progressing, ready for their very difficult adjudication on Wednesday evening after the final performance. It has been great to hear music and singing all around school and I know that House Drama will be a spectacular finale to mark end of another year at Pate’s. I wish everyone a restful weekend to recharge those batteries for a very tiring last week of term, and I look forward to welcome many of you to the performances on Tuesday and Wednesday, when we can marvel at one of the most special events in the school year.

Yours sincerely
