DIWALI 2017 - CALL FOR DANCERS, SINGERS AND PARENTS!
Congratulations to everyone who was involved in House Drama this week – it was a momentous occasion and when York were announced the winners, not having won it ever before, it felt more like the winning goal in Wembley stadium than a school hall! Pembroke received the Director’s special award – the Shakespeare Cup (kindly donated by Edward Derbyshire) - their show ‘The Firebird’ was outstanding, despite only having Y7s in it! What a talented and spirited group! The following awards were made: Beaufort – Choreography; Gloucester – Stagecraft; Richmond – Music; York – Design. The award for good will, organisation and dedication, obviously must go to our amazing five star Parents’ Association! Thank you so much to them for their amazing generosity and hospitality! My thanks to the staff who gave their all to achieve such a spectacle, and to Edward Derbyshire in particular, who sadly leaves us this summer to follow exciting projects of his own. His Gloucestershire Youth Players will be on tour performing 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' at various locations this week - please visit their website for details www.gyptheatre.org.
We were delighted to be supported by our House Sponsors at the Tuesday evening House Drama performance. I would like to express my thanks to Montpellier Lodge (Beaufort), Harrison Clark Rickersbys (Gloucester), Willans (Pembroke), MD2MD (Richmond) and Evans Jones (York) for their sponsorship over the last 12 months. Our House System is reliant on the extra funds provided by these sponsors. We look forward to welcoming some new sponsors on board in September. More on that at the start of next term.
This week, the Pate's Refugee 6th form Society organised an informative lunchtime talk from Adele Owen, the Director of GARAS, (Gloucestershire Action for Refugees). Adele outlined the current concerns surrounding human rights for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK and the gaps in provision for social care and education. The society were given lots of pointers for pressure group lobbying and ways to raise awareness with the younger years as they take their newly formed society forward next year. Thank you to Ellie Williams (Y12) for organising this valuable opportunity.
Yesterday’s Charity Day was great fun and superbly well-organised by our sixth form team, who managed to raise £1333.58! This will be split between Cancer Research UK and The British Heart Foundation. Well done to them and to everyone who performed on the open mic. Special thanks to Denise Hardy for her support and encouragement.
DIWALI 2017: Time flies very quickly and we are entering into the third year of Diwali celebrations at Pate’s. It’s that time of the year to call for entries for the Diwali show. If you have been involved in previous years you will know what a wonderful celebration of Indian dance, food and culture this is. It is something we are very proud of at Pate’s and it would not be possible without the help of Thrinethra Gowri Shankar (Y11) and her family. We would like as many people as possible to be involved, as follows:
We would like following information of students who would like to perform dances:
Individual / Group Name:
Item: Indian Dance / Musical Instruments/Music
Music associated with the item:
We would like the following information if you would like to help compere the show:
We are planning to include Indian Folk dance for Mums / Dads and if any of the parents would like to take part, please send your interest to the above email address. The practice sessions will be organised during school lunch times or in the evenings. We are also planning to have a group song while lighting the candles at the very beginning of the show. It is a repetition of the verses and maximum of 5 minutes. If you are interested in singing please send your details. Again the practice sessions will be organised during school lunch times or in the evenings. You will get a recorded version to practice at leisure. We are looking for at least 20 – 25 students.
District cricket success: Both the U13 and U15 cricket teams played in the Cheltenham and District Cricket Finals last week. The U13s chased Bournside's total hard but came up short, however the U15s scored freely to score the 130 to win with a few overs to spare. Congratulations to both teams and to Sarosh Khan who scored 51 not out in the winning U15 team.
Shooting Success: Pate's have won the UK Schools Aggregate for the second year against some of the wealthiest independent schools in the country, such as Charterhouse, Wellington and many more. We've also won the trophies for the Gloucestershire and South West regions. We won silver in the 'falling plate' competition, a race to hit down 10 small targets with the GP assault rifle. Four cadets made the GP 20, meaning they are some of the best GP shooters in the country, and similarly we had four cadets in the CTR Cadet 100 (cadet target rifle). In shotgun, we also attained a bronze medal for the school. This has been an outstanding year for the team, building on last year's success. Congratulations to them on this really incredible achievement, and thanks in particular to our Head of Outdoor Education, Jane Jowett, for making it possible for our students to compete at this level.
Congratulations to Dhruthi Harish (Y7), who won the Avon County Road to Wimbledon Tournament last weekend, which qualifies her to represent Avon County and compete in the National finals which will be held next month on the grass courts at Wimbledon.
Pre-season rugby training: With everyone excited about next season’s rugby, pre-season training has been organised for Friday 1st September, as detailed in the attached letter. Please make every effort to attend. Thank you.
