In whole school assembly this morning senior girls showed a film and photos from their South Africa sports tour which took place in July – what an incredible experience, packed with sport, safari and sightseeing! My thanks to our PE staff for all their organising and fundraising support they give to the students. Senior boys will start fundraising soon for their tour next summer, which will be begin with an auction night in November.  Also this morning I was delighted to officially congratulate members of the Shooting Team and present them with their trophies from summer competitions. For the second year running they won the UK Schools Aggregate, the South West Regions, AND the Gloucestershire Trophies, competing against over 600 schools in the country, including the likes of Charterhouse, Wellington, Victoria College, Cheltenham College, Marlborough College and many more. Congratulations to the team: Sagnik Bose, Alexander Cheetham , Alex Clarke, Matthew Connole, Ben Corbishley, Tom Jaggard, Sam Jones, Peter Kenmir, Laura Lyons, Ryan McGowen, Henry Milner-Benham, Joe Murphy, James Nichols, Pearlin Paudyal, Doug Wescott, Henry Wigston and Alex Woodsford.

Support Staff Vacancy: for the role of Development Assistant, working as part of a small team to provide administrative support on all aspects of the Development Office’s work in its function to deliver the fundraising and alumni relations objectives of the school.  This is a fixed term contract, running until the end of the Summer term 2018 (although it may lead to a longer term role). Hours routinely 9.30-12.30 weekdays, term time (including INSET days), although flexibility in working arrangements will be required. The role will demand evening and weekend work and may require some work during the school holidays. The precise hours can be negotiated for the right candidate. Music Department News:
Music theory lessons: This year we are once again running music theory lessons. These will take place in the Music Department after school on Wednesdays, 4-5pm. There will be thirty lessons across the year, at a cost of £5 per lesson, payable termly. Lessons are mainly aimed at those wanting to take ABRSM Grade 5 theory in June 2018. Please ensure you have these dates in your diary, particularly if your child has signed up for a music ensemble, as participation in concerts is part of the commitment. I’d like to draw particular attention to the Cory Band workshop and concert on Sunday 8th October: we are incredibly lucky to have this world famous brass band performing at Pate’s, and both events will be unmissable. Music ensembles starting w/c 2nd October: Regular rehearsals for music ensembles will kick off after House Music, in the week commencing Monday 2nd October. All parents are invited to the Parents’ Association AGM from 7pm to 8pm on Wednesday, 4th October in the Art Gallery. Tea and cake afterwards! New committee members will be elected and annual reports submitted. In the following year several key committee members (including but not limited to Chair, 100 Club and Stock Manager) will come to the end of their term of office. The Parents’ Association secondhand uniform service is moving up a notch. A PA volunteer will open and man the cupboard on the First and Third Fridays of every month and also by arrangement. A wish-list has also been established so if you are looking for a specific item of uniform and it is not there, just pop it on the list and the PA will be in touch if one is donated. URGENT: Host Families for Chinese Students in September – payment of £150 per week: Unfortunately we are still a touch short of one or two families to host our Chinese visitors from September 28th to October 14th 2017. The students are aged 16-17 and so looking forward to their 2 weeks here, seeing what it's like to be a Pate's student – we don’t want to have to turn anyone away! DIWALI 2017: We are entering into the third year of Diwali celebrations at Pate’s. Calling for entries for the Diwali show. If you have been involved in previous years you will know what a wonderful celebration of Indian dance, food and culture this is. It is something we are very proud of at Pate’s and it would not be possible without the help of Thrinethra Gowri Shankar (Y11) and her family. We would like as many people as possible to be involved, as follows:

We are planning to include Indian Folk dance for Mums / Dads and if any of the parents would like to take part, please send your interest to the above email address. The practise sessions will be organised during school lunch times or in the evenings. We are also planning to have a group song while lighting the candles at the very beginning of the show. It is a repetition of the verses and maximum of 5 minutes. If you are interested in singing please send your details. Student Achievements:
Rosanna Crabb-Lahei (Y13) has been awarded a prestigious Army Officer Scholarship award and bursary, enabling her to go to Sandhurst after her degree for army officer training. Rosanna is hoping to study medicine and become an army doctor. Extremely well done to Rosanna, and thanks to the members of staff who have supported her throughout the application process.
Cambridge University competition Special Commendations: Becky Fox (Y13) received a Special Commendation for the Cambridge Robinson College essay competition - for her essay on 'If our ideas about gender are culturally shaped, should children be allowed to watch Disney films?’ Asisa Johal (Y13) received a special commendation for the RA Butler Competition run by Trinity College, Cambridge for her essay on ‘How does the concept of intersectionality affect our understanding of gender inequality?’  Congratulations to Becky and Asisa, who will be collecting their prizes from Cambridge university in a few weeks’ time.
