It was good to see everyone in whole school assembly this morning, after a few weeks missing because of study leave and exams. I congratulated the students who worked so hard throughout their exams and was able to personally thank the many sixth formers who helped out at our open evening on Tuesday – whether they showed people around, talked about subjects in departments, or performed with Gill Mew and the Big Band. Here is just some of the feedback we have received about our students: “His open & pleasant manner… relayed to my son how welcome he’d be made to feel if he was to earn a place in Year 12.” “Our guide was particularly polite, approachable, informative and intelligent - a real credit to your school.”  It was an exciting evening, especially as we were able to unveil plans for the new Sixth Form centre which current Year 11 students will be able to benefit from almost from the start of their time in sixth form.  However we know it is the sixth formers themselves who represent everything which is so special about the school, so my thanks once again to them and to parents who came out to collect them at the end of the night.

I was joined in assembly this morning by Jordan Allison from the University of Gloucestershire, sponsor of the recent Hilary Clinton event at the literature festival. Jordan spoke about the event and awarded Lily Curle (Y12) a certificate and £50 prize money, in recognition of her reporting of her meeting with the first woman presidential candidate of the United States, which was highly commended by the university. Our thanks to the University of Gloucestershire for giving our girls this incredible opportunity.  Read Lily’s report here.

Y11 Mock Interviews: “For our flexible learning day this week we experienced the first taste of a job interview, with the help of parents and associates of Pate’s. Despite the initial nerves, everyone was able to speak confidently and gain experience which will be much valued in the future. Many of us learnt much more about ourselves and really benefitted from the experience of answering questions and thinking on our feet, as well as enabling us to consider our paths for the future. We would like to thank all the interviewers for taking time out of their busy schedules to help us gain invaluable skills and provide us with an intellectually stimulating conversation. Also, thank you to Mrs Adams-Morgan for organising this for us!”  By Leanne Crooke, Amy Godfrey, Amy Howard, and Jemima Jones (11B).

This has also been a week of unprecedented student illness due to a flu virus and a sickness bug. These are nasty things and it is best if students be kept off school until fully recovered, rather than struggle in only to be sent home again ill.
