Stonewall Small

Charity Committee led assembly this morning to tell us all about their ‘Love is Love’ event in aid of ‘Stonewall’ this Friday. The committee will be joining forces with the school’s Amnesty society to show solidarity with LGBT+ / human rights issues, and this coming Friday 9th February will be a rainbow-themed mufti day – students should bring £1 to wear multi-coloured clothing (or £1.50 for non-rainbow mufti). There will be a variety of activities in the Gallery at break and lunchtime, as well as serenade-o-grams taking place throughout the day (bookable in advance).  Calling all bakers!: Students can help the fundraising effort by bringing in cake donations on the day please! Please bring any cake donations to the Art Gallery on Friday morning. Thank you.  Also in assembly, the outgoing committee were delighted to present a cheque for £1880 to the ‘James Hopkins Trust’, which they raised by organising Charity Day in the summer. This generous donation on behalf of our students will have a great impact on this local charity, enabling 125 hours of respite care for families with disabled children. Well done to the organisers of this event – they should be very proud to have made such a difference to such a good cause.

My thanks to our Director of Music, Ellie Lane, and her dedicated team for a fabulous concert on Wednesday evening - there can be no doubt that Pate’s is privileged to have so many talented musicians and an army of dedicated staff to support them. My thanks also to the PE Department (and Heads of House) for organising the House Swimming Gala heats this week – I am looking forward to the finals next week!

Message from Chair of Governors: We currently have two parent governor vacancies. Governors play an important decision-making role in the strategic planning and management of the school, working with the Head Master and senior leadership team, and are appointed for four years. Whatever your background, key attributes for this role are time, effort and commitment. Please follow this link for full details, job description and self-nomination form. The deadline for nominations is midnight on Wednesday 21st February.

Books of raffle tickets will come home with students straight after half-term but if you think you may be able to sell any to family and friends over the break please take some books from the Reception desk or email This email address is being protected from spambots. Y13 student Matt Connole hosted a talk this week by Mike Saunders from Gloucestershire Conservative Future, who spoke to our Sixth Form Politics society on the subject of "Why I Voted Brexit". Although the many students who attended the talk did not necessarily agree with Mr Saunders' position on the subject, they were more than happy to listen to what he had to say, before asking a series of probing questions and, despite the fact that it was his first ever political speech, Mike did an excellent job of answering them. It was a valuable opportunity for those in attendance to hear arguments that they had not previously considered, and to engage in some interesting debate. Our thanks to Mike for having the courage of his convictions, and to Matt for organising the talk.

Finally, I must thank my serenade-o-grammars for a very moving performance at the end of this morning’s assembly to promote their Valentine’s Day fundraising – priceless! (and almost speechless)
