 HEADLINES:

  • Pate’s in the League Tables
  • ‘Hamlet’ (Sixth Form Play) - Thurs-Sat 5th-7th February @ 7pm
  • Concerts at Pate’s
  • Calendar / Trips Update
  • Free tickets for Cheltenham Town FC vs Tranmere Rovers Sat 28th Feburary

The League Tables were published this week, and for the first time in three years our GCSE results have been included. Although it was bizarrely comforting to be right at the bottom of the pile at the time when we studied the (non-league tabled) iGCSE, it is also nice to be nationally recognised for what we are doing here at Pate’s. Please read the BBC News article (here), which looks at the ‘best 8 points scores’ across all schools in the country. We are delighted with our placing, and also that we are the third best state school in the post-16 tables.

I am very much looking forward to our Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday 27th January. Mrs Hooper and I will be talking to our own Year 11 families about life in the Sixth Form (5pm in the hall), as well as welcoming hundreds of families from other schools (7pm onwards) who would like to consider Pate’s as an option for Sixth Form. My thanks to the many parents who will be organising transport for our sixth form tour guides on the night. Every year we are inundated with compliments about how friendly and engaging our students are and it is no wonder that so many new students want to join us.

Crossing language and culture boundaries has never been more important or more relevant than it is in today’s world and in our whole school assembly this morning Mrs Attwood, Head of Languages, showed an inspirational short film and spoke to students to tell them about how the school will celebrate next week’s Languages Week. To start the week we will be welcoming students from other local schools to take part in special events and students should expect a continental flair in the refectory all week!

As we start the new term, I would like to thank all of you who have supported/are supporting the Annual Fund, ‘Riding the Rapids’ 2014-15, the associated Piano Appeal and the Parents’ Association. I would also like to add additional thanks as a result of an anonymous donation directly in support of the ‘Tech’ aspect of the Annual Fund specifically to purchase a set of radio microphones and their associated battery packs. This is incredibly kind and provides a fantastic additional resource for our performing arts department and our tech capability generally. With extremely challenging financial times ahead such acts of generosity provide me with a great feeling of hope and determination that we can keep Pate’s special. I am very grateful for all of your support. ‘Riding the Rapids’ has so far raised £26,639 – THANK YOU.

We were delighted to welcome Holocaust survivor Zigi Shipper on Monday to speak to Year 9 History students. Zigi, who survived Auschwitz, had the students spellbound for 90 minutes as he recounted his incredible life story with humour and passion.  I am grateful to Mr Morton for organising this privilege for our students.  Also this week Year 8 held their annual Christmas community event, when children from local primary schools joined us for some Christmas cheer, singing, games and gifts!  Well done to everyone involved and to Miss Thorpe for helping them with their organisation and hosting.

Congratulations to everyone involved in Wizard of Oz. Almost 1500 people came through our doors over the four shows and what a fabulous experience it was, with all the pyrotechnics, lighting, scenery, stunning performances – and even snow!. The sheer exuberance of the students was remarkable. Professional photographs from the show are available to purchase via our website – please click here to see them. The show was filmed by our own student tech crew – please click here to order a DVD costing £10 (proceeds to school tech.). The DVDs will be available from 8th December in plenty of time for Christmas.

We welcomed almost 500 primary school children to Pate’s this week for their own special performance of The Wizard of Oz. They had a great time and, thanks to the generosity of the Parents’ Association, everyone was given a small bag of sweets during the interval. It is terrific to kick off the show with a packed audience of excited children and just delightful to see their response to it all. I was very proud of our students, who provided the warmest of welcomes and a thoroughly entertaining performance. If you have tickets for the Wizard of Oz this weekend you are in for a treat!  The show is being filmed by our own student tech crew and DVDs will cost £10 (proceeds to school tech.).  The DVDs can be ordered on show nights or by following this link.  They will be available from 8th December in plenty of time for Christmas.

Autumnconcert14

Last night’s Autumn Concert was amazing from the start with Second Orchestra performing 'Money Money Money'; the enthusiasm of the Y8 boys choir singing 'Mambo Italiano' was something to behold, as was the Big Band finale with Beth Griffin singing 'Feeling Good'. Suffice is to say that we were all feeling very good by the end!  Well over 200 students took part in the concert involving every genre of music and I believe there could not be a better evening’s entertainment to be had from any stage. My huge thanks to Ms Lane and her department, including the peripatetic teachers who were involved. We are currently raising money to replace one of our practice pianos in the Music Department. Anyone who has attended any of our concerts or shows will appreciate the dedication that students and staff put in; it is a great shame that not all of our resources are able to adequately support them in their efforts. If you are able make a donation towards this you can be sure we will be extremely grateful. Please click here for further details.

Today we were delighted to welcome Julie Girling, Conservative MEP for the South West & Gibraltar, who gave a fascinating talk to our Sixth Form Politics students on the workings of the EU and Conservative party policy. I am delighted that, by the end of term and in the run up to the general election, we will have hosted a mix of political speakers and ideals. My thanks to staff for organising these opportunities.

Oscilloscopes1

I was delighted to welcome Helen Mardell and Greg Howard (Pate’s parents), representing Comspace Limited – technical consultants in cellular and mobile satcoms, into school today to thank them for the company’s donation of £2000 to the Annual Fund, in particular to enable us to purchase some of the required oscilloscopes. Students were on hand to demonstrate the new equipment and our student photographers Allie Ganz and Kevin Beeson captured the occasion. It was a wonderful opportunity for me, the physics staff and some of our students to be able to demonstrate the real need for these items of equipment and the benefits they bring. We are very grateful to Comspace for its donation and the resulting new oscilloscopes. I would like to add my thanks to all those supporting the Annual Fund and hope that we will be able to purchase the remaining oscilloscopes shortly after half term. We still have many more items on our list of goals though, so please consider supporting the fund if you haven’t already done so.
