Old Boys Football v 1st XI

On Saturday a team of past first team footballers took on a current first XI made up of Year 13 leavers.

Despite being the underdogs, the first team still managed to pull off a 3-2 win coming back from 1-2 down, thanks to goals from Ben Simpson, Mark Morris and Joe Savidge.  It was good to see all the Old Boys again and play a very competitive game of football.

After the game all the Old Boys, Old Girls and current first team players gathered in the refectory for a lunch altogether.

PGL U13 A team netball match report

From Friday 1st of March 2013 to Sunday the 4th, the U13 netball A team, along with the B and C teams, travelled to Liddington in Swindon for a PGL netball tour. We were all extremely excited for the trip and most of us were packed and ready a long time before.

On the Saturday after being woken up by Mrs Furze, we ate breakfast. It was really nice and by this time we were so excited for the games ahead it was in a way, odd. After breakfast, we went to our rooms to get ready to be out on the courts at 8:45 as our first matches were just after 9:00.

The matches were going to be 5 minutes each way, with 2 halves. Our matches started off well, with us winning our first match 6-0. Our second match, against Langley was another great victory: 8-0. Thirdly, we played Brownedge, who were a team of really short year 7s! This was an even better victory of 13-0. Then, we played Newport. They were a lot tougher than the other teams, but after a well fought battle in both defence and attack, we won 4-2. After Newport, we played Stratford 1, they were yet again a good team but we conquered the match and won 7-2. That was it for the first day of matches so we went to our rooms to get ready for lunch and the PGL activities in the afternoon.

After a nice lunch, we headed out to the activity field where we could go on a 36ft zip wire or abseiling or archery or vertical challenge or a giant swing, that was scary, or even aeroball, which was a mixture of trampolining and netball! Amazing! Later on, we went to have dinner and after, we played 'ambush' which was a game similar to hide and seek but it was in the dark.

The next day, Sunday, we had more matches. We went out early to watch the C team as they had a match at precisely 9:03! We then had to wait half an hour until our first match against St. Paul's who were another year 7 team; waiting between matches was the worst part. So eventually it came to our match and Mrs Furze set us the challenge to always pass in order as she knew it would be an easy game. We all got on court ready to play and so did the opposition. The match started off well and we had possession for most of the time and when they had possession, it wasn't for long. Victory was ours yet again as the final score was 13-0. After our match against St. Pauls we waited 20 minutes for our second game against Stratford 2 which we knew would be an easy game considering we beat Stratford 1 7-2. We were right! The game was easy: we didn't lose much possession and our shooting and defence were incredible. The final score was 16-0! Then all that was left was the final. We later found out it would be against Newport and as we had beaten them before, we were aiming to beat them again and increase the score difference. We did! The Newport team were good again but we were better and after a well fought game, we beat them 9-2. We had won the tournament!

It took a while for winning to sink in but before long everyone was ecstatic! At 12:45 the PGL staff presented us with our medals and trophy and we all were happy! Then it hit us that we had to leave and go home. We all grabbed our bags and returned back to Pate's and home after an amazing netball tour that none of us wanted to leave. So after great defence, amazing centre court, and incredible shooting we left with a medal and a great memory to be treasured for a long time.

U15 Football – Pittville vs Pate’s - Match Report

Result – Pittville 2 - 10 Pate’s

Scorers – Jacob Ritter (3), Jonny Ford (3), Josh Dean (1), Ned N-S (1), Harvey Collins (1), Ash Hughes (1)

In their second league fixture this term, Pate’s were able to maintain their unbeaten start with an emphatic victory. However, despite early dominance, the away side were continually frustrated by Pittville’s keeper. In the end, it took a special effort to break the deadlock, which came when Jacob Ritter hit a first time shot into the top corner from outside the area. Pate’s kicked on from this, and by half time the score was 5-0, with some particularly good team goals being scored.

The second half was more of the same. Pate’s scored 5 more goals, playing some good football in the process. The final whistle was blown when Harvey Collins outsprinted the defence and then volleyed a perfectly placed through ball into the top corner. Pate’s will however be disappointed they conceded two goals in the second half. That being said, Pittville took their chances very well and battled right up until the end.

U15 Football – Balcarras vs Pate’s

In Pate’s first league fixture of the season, they put in a strong performance, showing they will not be an easy game for any team in the league.

The win was made all the more impressive by the fact that they came back from a goal scored by Balcarras in the first minute of the game. The ball was played behind the back four to a Balcarras winger who coolly slotted the ball into the corner of the net. However, for the rest of the half Pate’s took control. A great corner delivery by Josh Dean put pressure on the Balcarras defence, leaving Jonny Ford unmarked to put the ball into the back of the net. Five minutes before half time, Pate’s got a deserved second, when Ash Hughes scored a wonderful free kick from 20 yards. Ed Englefield subsequently compared him to Juan Mata!

In the second half, Balcarras gained momentum, however the whole Pate’s team worked tirelessly off the ball and restricted their chances right up to the final whistle, whilst looking very dangerous on the counter. Pate’s will hope to strengthen their title credentials with two wins next week against Pittville and Tewkesbury.

Result – Balcarras 1 – 2 Pate’s

Scorers – Jonny Ford, Ashley Hughes

Netball U12 v Cleeve Match Report

On Wednesday 20th February, Pates U12 team played Cleeve school. We started the match feeling quite nervous, because we had no idea about what their team were like, or how well they played. From a distance their players were really tall, so we entered the first quarter having lost the toss and feeling a bit unsure about how the match ahead would turn out.

However, despite Cleeve having first centre pass, we steamed ahead with some amazing passes from Inca, Ella and Emma, and some brilliant shots from the edge of the D or practically under the net from Beth and Sophie. By the end of the quarter, we were leading 6-1.

Feeling pretty confident, we entered the next quarter. Although we had some good breakthroughs by Minnie and nice passes being fed up the pitch by Claude and Millie, we couldn’t quite keep up the pace as we had in the first quarter, and at half time it was 8-5 to Pates.

Knowing that this was a crucial quarter, we played the third as well as we could, with yet more good passing.  However, as we were about half-way through, Emma slipped and twisted her ankle. Ella bravely came on as wing defence, but at the end of the third quarter we were narrowly beating Cleeve 12-8.

In the final quarter, our team played really well, working as unit with Claude working like a machine to get the ball up to the attackers. We pulled ahead again and managed to beat Cleeve 15-10, which we were all very happy with.

We left the courts with big grins on our faces, really happy with what we had achieved and very proud of ourselves.

U15 Netball Match Report - 24th Jan

On the 24th January the U15 Netball B team played against Dean Close School. We started well despite having to borrow Manon Matthews and Anya Karadia from the As to play centre at such short notice.  Even though we hadn’t had a match for a while, our passing was accurate and we worked well at getting into spaces. There was some great shooting from Caitlin Tilley who was awarded player of the match. Although the team worked hard and made some excellent interceptions, Dean Close were too good for us this time. The final score was 10-7 to them. Well done to everyone who played.

U15 Netball - 1st Nov

On Thursday 1st November the U15 Netball A team played against a strong Cleeve side. We dominated the match from the beginning and took an early lead. It was a great performance from Cara Downward who stepped up to play in a shooting position at short notice. There were many great interceptions in defence especially from Meg Mather and Brigitta Behan who read the passes very well. We forged ahead considerably with a high team morale finishing half time at 14 – 7 to Pate’s. Due partly to too much familiarity with the opposition and Cleeve fighting back to close the gap the play became a bit frantic. However, we managed to retain our lead to win the game 25 – 19. We hope to work on our movement of the ball from defence after winning the ball and making sure everyone re-offers to help the ball carrier. Well done to everyone who played; it was a well deserved victory.

Player of the match was awarded to: Cara Downward
